Police in India have rescued a woman whose husband’s family allegedly held her captive in a bathroom for three years because her parents failed to pay enough dowry.Gunja Devi, 25, was dressed in tattered clothes and looked very scared, the officer who rescued her told BBC Hindi. She was also denied contact with her daughter who is now three.According to the International Business Times, Chief officer Seema Kumari said: ‘The woman could barely open her eyes in the sunlight, as she had survived in darkness and dim light, closeted in the small space.
‘The woman revealed that she was thrown into the bathroom and locked there.She was not allowed to see her child, and given leftover food irregularly. It was as if her in-laws were seeking revenge for not bringing ample dowry and for giving birth to a girl child.’Police officials said that the victim was married to Prabhat Kumar Singh in 2010 but soon after the wedding, she was allegedly repeatedly tortured by her husband and in-laws and told to bring in more dowry.When the dowry demands were unmet and she gave birth to a baby girl, she was locked up.According to reports in the local media, the rescue operation took place more than a week ago and photos at the time showed Gunja Devi appearing bedraggled from captivity – dressed in tattered clothes with unkempt hair and overgrown nails.Her family has alleged that her torture escalated when she gave birth to a girl, in a culture where boys are valued.She immediately asked for her three-year-old daughter and wept inconsolably when the child could not recognise herA police complaint has been lodged against Gunja Devi’s husband and her in-laws.
