Seasons, occasions, expectations and periodical events all add flavour and glamour to life. Have you ever stopped to imagine how monotonous, banal and entirely boring our short time on earth would be without certain periods to anticipate; without Fridays, for that TGIF feeling; without #December for the usual annual reunion, ecstasy and jollification?
Variation, they say, is the spice of life and #Christmas period variably brings forth much dining, wining, displaying and spending – a significant disparity from the normal January to November life. One is moved to wonder if people are issued permit to spend rashly only in December. One is equally moved to wonder if there is any justification for hustling, mortifying, saving, sacrificing and slogging for eleven months all to expend the results of the toils in the second half of the twelfth month, returning to factory setting in the next.
This epicurean tendency is a sad development in society. People buy clothes and gargets which they cannot afford just to look sophisticated in this period. Cars are purchased with borrowed money, holidays are faked, girlfriends are painfully gratified, ridiculous sums are spent on trivialities, mindless parties are staged, gratuitous donations are made in public places, ostentatious titles are taken, all to air flamboyance, all geared towards belonging; towards showing that you’ve not been left behind.
